The RadoNorm Course “Radon therapy: theory and practice, benefits and health risks” (RATH) took place at the LMU in Munich from 7th April until 11th April 2025. The course explored the relationship between radon as a health risk and radon as a benefit when it is used as medication. The course began with a series of lectures on the effects of alpha radiation, radon exposure, radon therapy and radon dosimetry. 8 course participants and two teachers travelled to Bad Gastein, one of the oldest and most famous radon spas in Europe where, thanks to Sonja Wildburger from the Research Institute Gastein, Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg, they visited the Bad Gastein Radon Gallery and the and the “Stiftung Kurtherme Badehospiz” in Bad Gastein. Dosimetric measurements were carried out and water and rock samples were collected for activity measurements. On the next day followed a visit at the University of Erlangen to learn about studies on the effect of radon and low dose gamma radiation on the immune system. Participants also visited the labs and could try out staining techniques of cells that are related to immune response to alpha radiation. The last day was devoted to discussing the knowledge gained about the medical application of radon and radiation measurement results.
