Tasks:

Task 7.1 Recruitment of PhD students and Postdocs for specified projects in RadoNorm

Leader: BfS, partners: IRSN, MTA, STUK, SURO, SCK•CEN, SU, EIMV, UEF (M1-M6)

This task will organise opens calls and carry out the selection process of PhD students and Postdocs who will be funded by RadoNorm. By participating in the planned work, PhD students and early carrier scientists will acquire a wide knowledge in the field of radiation protection research as well as learn to collaborate at the European level. Students will be affiliated to the university where they will receive the PhD degree as well as to the RadoNorm participating institute where the work will be carried out if both are not the same. Uniform and transparent selection criteria will apply when selecting applicants. Funds to financially support the PhD students and early carrier scientists will be transferred to the host institute after the selection process (ANNEX 3).

Role of Partners: A representative from each RadoNorm WP will participate in the recruitment process as well as the responsible principle investigator/mentoring representative of the host institute/university.

Metrics to be used for measuring WP achievement: List of recruited PhD students.

Task 7.2 Monitoring the progress of PhD projects

Leader: SU, partners: BfS, IRSN, MTA, STUK, SURO, SCK•CEN, EIMV, UEF (M13-M60)

This task will organise biannual teleconferences with the recruited PhD students and early carrier scientists to follow the progress of work. During the teleconference each students and early carrier scientists will shortly report about the work progress and report any problems/obstacles. During annual project meetings a dedicated session will be organised where PhD students and early carrier scientists will present details of their work progress.

Role of Partners: Partners will form a committee to follow and evaluate the progress of work.

Metrics to be used for measuring WP achievement: Reports on progress of work.

Task 7.3 Exchange visits of PhD students and early career researchers

Leader: BfS, partners: IRSN, MTA, STUK, SURO, SCK•CEN, SU, EIMV, UEF (M12-M60)

This task will organize and fund exchange visits of PhD students and early career researchers (defined as being less than five years after defending the PhD at the time of being hired to work for the RadoNorm project). The aim of the visits will be to learn or train skills in techniques relevant for the work program of RadoNorm.

Role of Partners: Lead partner will manage applications and the Management Board will be the decision taking body. Lead partner will also manage the budget from which the costs of the exchange visits will be reimbursed.

Metrics to be used for measuring WP achievement: List of PhD students and early career researchers who profited from the exchange program.

Task 7.4 Courses for PhD students and early career researchers

Leader: SU, partners: BfS, IRSN, MTA, STUK, SURO, SCK•CEN, EIMV, UEF (M13-M60)

Particular topics or scientific areas generally relevant for research necessary for improved protection of people and the environment from harmful effects of ionising radiation and specifically for areas tackled by RadoNorm will be identified and open calls for targeted E&T activities will be launched. The target audience will be PhD students and early career researchers. Activities may take the form of short courses, teaching, workshops, practical work or summer schools. An annual open call will be made for institutions to organise activities (up to 2 weeks length). Grants for short courses and other initiatives such as summer schools and seminars will be made on the basis of direct costs (travel, subsistence, consumables).

Applications submitted in response to the calls will be initially reviewed by the task participants to ensure compliance with all the call conditions. Choice of applications to be recommended for funding will be made taking account of the need for the topic, the quality of the proposal, and value for money. Recommendations will be submitted to the RadoNorm ExB for approval.

The selection of participants in an event will be done by the local organisers. A fixed number of places will be reserved for PhD students and early career researchers funded by RadoNorm. Other participants will be selected based on merits.

Role of Partners: Lead partner will receive and manage applications that will be jointly evaluated and ranked by all task participants. The Management Board will be the decision taking body.

Metrics to be used for measuring WP achievement: List of funded E&T activities and participants
