A new paper has been published in “Frontiers of Public Health” by Afi Mawulawoe Sylvie Henyoh, Olivier Laurent, Corinne Mandin and Enora Clero at IRSN, France, working in WP4 (Effects & Risks) of RadoNorm.

In their paper “Radon exposure and potential health effects other than lung cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis”, health effects of radon on humans other than lung cancer were explored. For this, a literature review of 129 studies and a meta-analysis of 40 studies were performed. Both occupational and environmental exposures to radon were considered. The results showed no statistically significant association for the investigated diseases, but the associations were positive and close to statistical significance for lympho-haematological cancer in children, as well as malignant melanoma and cancers of the liver, intestine and rectum in adults. Although these results did not allow them to confirm radon-related risks other than lung cancer on the basis of the epidemiological studies currently available, they stress the need for additional research with larger and well-designed studies to investigate this question further.
