Founded in 1891, the University of Gothenburg (UGOT) is one of Sweden’s largest and oldest universities, with over 53,000 students, 2,000 doctoral students, and 6,700 employees. UGOT conducts successful world-class research characterised by interdisciplinary collaboration closely linked to education.

UGOT, Medical Radiation Sciences, Institute of Clinical sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy has a long history of research within radiation protection and effects of radiation on humans and on the environment. The extent of this research is continuously growing, and research groups are active within research topics as radiation biology, environmental radioactivity, radioanalytical chemistry and emergency preparedness. Some of the active research areas are radiation biology, radiation dosimetry and radioecology, which have been characterised as vulnerable in terms of the volume of research by the Swedish radiation safety authority (SSM). In summary, a large part of the radiation protection research in Sweden is carried out by UGOT. In addition to research, education within these topics is continuously provided, for example, the profession education Medical physicist program and courses for a Master’s degree in radiation protection.
