A new article was published by colleagues from University of Barcelona working in WP2 (Exposure) of RadoNorm. The article titled Chemical analogues and probabilistic functions to derive distribution coefficients of radium in soils in the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity addresses existing data gaps in the sorption and desorption parameters of Ra in soils, which challenge the use of radioecological risk assessment models. Two alternative approaches are presented. The first involves deducing sorption and desorption parameters from chemical analogues (such as Ba and Sr) by applying suitable correction factors to obtain Kd (Ra) values. The second involves deriving distribution functions of Kd (Ra) from datasets compiled from both own and literature-reviewed data, enabling the selection of more representative best estimate Kd (Ra) values depending on the scenario assessed.
