ROOMS is a conference dedicated to national and international scientific community members, radon testers, diagnosticians, mitigators, educators, public stakeholders, business people and authorities and aims to exchange information on solutions to radon problems in buildings. The main topics are:
- Building protection measurements: prevention, diagnosis, remediation
- Radon remediation in specific conditions: waterworks, special workplaces, public buildings
- Impact of changes in building techniques or energy retrofit: low-energy building, etc.
ROOMS2024 will be held from 7th – 10th October 2024 in Madeira, Portugal by ERA. Related info on https://madeirarnweek.com/.

Presenter: Radim Možnar
Abstract:
The research presented is found in Deliverable D5.4, which focuses on the issue of building materials as a source of radon in the interior of residential buildings and methods to mitigate this phenomenon. The deliverable summarises the legislative requirements of the European Union, available normative documents and methodologies. Other chapters deal with different types of building materials and their relevance to the risk of radon exhalation. Great emphasis is placed on the importance of preventive measurement of building materials and the establishment of a robust register. The main chapter presents case studies from recent years in which different mitigation methods have been used and their effectiveness has been evaluated.

Event Details
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with techniques of studying genotoxic effects of ionising radiation which are of relevance for RadoNorm and the broad field of radiation research. The target group are students and young researchers with various backgrounds who want to get a basic introduction to biological effects of radiation. The course will contain both lectures and practical laboratory work. The lectures will focus on various aspects of biological effects of low and high LET ionising radiation as well as on techniques to detect them using cytogenetics and immunogenetics.
The practical part will focus on teaching laboratory techniques used to study genotoxic radiation effects on cells: 1) harvesting cells and analysing chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei by the Giemsa method; 2) in situ hybridization with whole chromosome probes and analysis of translocations; 3) gamma H2AX focus assay; 4) basics of high and low LET radiation detection and dosimetry.
The course will last 2 weeks and will be nested in a 10 week “introduction to radiobiology and cellular toxicology” course held at the Stockholm University (SU). The regular SU course is held for a maximum of 16 students. CELET will harbour a maximum of 12 students, bringing the total number of participants to 28.
Information for applicants: The course is open to any postgraduate student or researcher working in an EU academic institution. There is no course fee and every student will receive a financial support equivalent to 50 Euro per day to cover the costs of logging. The University has no logging possibilities so logging will be offered in a youth hostel. Alternatively, the applicant can find her/his own logging but the sum of financial support will remain 50 Euro per night. No other financial support will be provided
Course flyer and programme can be found on: https://www.radonorm.eu/calls/call-for-courses/

European Radiation Protection Week (ERPW) is an annual, multidisciplinary event which, under the Consortium of European Radiation Research Platforms (MEENAS), brings together experts and addresses topics related to radiation protection.
The ERPW meeting series is supported by key international organisations including, from the MEENAS Group: MELODI (Multidisciplinary European Low Dose Initiative), EURADOS (European Radiation Dosimetry Group), EURAMED (European Alliance for Medical Radiation Protection Research), NERIS (European Platform on Preparedness for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Response and Recovery), ALLIANCE (European Radioecology Alliance), and SHARE (European Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities in Ionising Radiation Research).
ERPW 2024 is being organised by Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), Rome, and by the Italian association of Radiation Protection (AIRP).
The conference aims to create a context for the presentation of scientific results aspiring to knowledge sharing and discussion of current and emerging issues related to radiation protection research, and to provide a space for the exchange of ideas and the establishment of collaborative links.
Topics:
- Patients exposure regarding medical applications
- Planned and existing exposure of members of the public and environment due to artificial radiation
- Planned and existing exposure of workers due to artificial radiation in normal operational conditions
- Exposure of members of the public and the environment with regard to legacy, waste management and decommissioning issues
- Exposure of members of the public, workers and the environment following a major nuclear or radiological accident or incident or malevolent nuclear or radiological act
- Biological and health effects after low dose exposure
- Radon and NORM
- Other

This prestigious event, jointly organized by the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) and the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA), is making a welcome return only two years after its last edition. It promotes reinvigorating invaluable interactions within the radioecology community.
In an era of transformative technological advancements, we’re delighted to introduce at ICRER 2024 discussions on cutting-edge topics such as big data and climate change, in addition to the traditional themes of radioecology and environmental radioactivity (environmental monitoring, NORM, nuclear legacy, human and environmental dose assessment, transfer modelling).
Get ready to connect with experts, share innovative ideas, and build partnerships that will influence the future of radioecology and more!
