Interest Group Meeting – Workshop
Small, smart & on the budget – Performance of electronic Radon monitors
Background
Due to progress in technology, new classes of electronic radon instruments are entering the market. Low cost, easy handling and smart design make them equally attractive for radon professionals and the general public. At all times, results of radon measurements should be accurate and traceable with a high metrological quality. More detailed investigations of the performance characteristics of such instruments at different measurement conditions are a declared wish.
What was done?
We investigated the measurement stability of 13 low-cost electronic radon instruments of different brands commercially available on the market. Rather different exposure conditions – very similar to the requirements of standard series IEC 61577 – reflect environmental conditions as encountered during field use. A number of comparable activities, also aiming at the testing of measurement principals or instrument performance had been considered in the RadoNorm project in various work packages.
What will be discussed?
The session will showcase the methodology and results of the performance tests and will frame the findings in the context of a RadoNorm goal – promotion of quality assurance. The detailed results of devices that passed through the test program without given notice to the manufacturers will be presented. We hope to foster a lively open exchange between manufacturers, users and stakeholders upon importance of normative standards, conformity testing and quality assurance of electronic radon instrumentation. The workshop strives for the identification of observed limitations, weaknesses and suggested improvements of e.g. physical-technical characteristics, quality assurance measures and pattern of use (or misuse) of electronic radon monitors.
Who should attend?
Manufacturers, users, radiation protection experts, accredited measurement institutions, interlaboratory comparisons and proficiency test organisers, calibration services providers and other stakeholders.
When and where?
The workshop is organised as an associated event to the European Radiation Protection Week 2023 in Dublin Ireland. The workshop is planned for Friday, 13th October 2023.
