The days from 3rd to 5th June 2025 were for the members of the RadoNorm consortium a bitter-sweet time as the RadoNorm project held its final meeting in Budapest, organised locally by the HUN-REN Center for Energy Research and Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS). A total of 100 consortium members and stakeholders gathered in person to discuss the achievements of the project’s five years and gather perspectives from notable representatives of international bodies such as the IAEA and ICRP, that were present at the event. The results were presented in 3 themes: “health and beating cancer”, “environmental risks” and “measures to protect people”. Under the overarching theme of “sustainable radiation protection for radon and NORM”, the panellists presented how RadoNorm’s results contribute to approaching the UN’s sustainable development goals.
The event was opened by Director General of the HUN-REN Center for Energy Research, Ákos Horváth, and the President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, Inge Paulini. The presentations delved into advances on diagnosing radon-induced lung cancer, epidemiological studies from uranium miner cohorts, assessing risks from thoron, assessing risks and measuring exposure from radon and NORM, and mapping behaviour of the public towards radon risk communication across Europe, to name a few. The event concluded with perspectives from RadoNorm’s early career researchers and their sustainable continuation in radiation protection through the ECRad initiative.
Aside from the research, the consortium members were able to meet together for one final time in the frame of the project and catch up on long-standing friendships and build collaboration among renowned European radiation protection institutions.
Slides are available online and the recordings will be soon available on the RadoNorm YouTube Channel.
